BMW Repair: BMW 320i, bmw 320i, jumper cables

Question
Josh,
i have a pretty general problem that i cant figure out on my '83 320i. i know this isn't your year of expertise, but i figure its similar. well here it is. i haven't started the car in a month, and the battery was dead, and i charged it. i then got into the car and turned the key, but i got a loud clicking, and the engine was jolting, but not really turning over. i checked the cables, battery, pigtail cables, etc. do you think its the starter? all other electronics work. fuses, relays, etc all fine.
               thx for your time,
                    Mike

Answer
Mike,
You are correct in you assumption that this is a general problem.  Based on your description of the problem, it sounds like your battery is dead, or too weak to operate the starter.  A starter uses a LOT of electricty to operate, so all your guages and lights may work, but the starter needs more energy, and it wont start the car.  You can use another vehicle to jump this one off with jumper cables, or you can charge the battery and put it back in the vehicle.

If you choose to jump the car off, make sure you allow the car to run for a while to recharge the battery.  Take it on a 15 minute drive somewhere, and the battery should be charged.

 Good luck,
 Josh
