BMW Repair: temp gauge, temp guage, good luck

the temp gauge on my 735i 1985 does not work, it looks like its not even hooked up. is there a place that i can check to see if it has been disabled by previous owner.

 I highly doubt someone would "disable" the temp guage.  Chances are that the sending unit is bad, and needs replacement.  It could also be the guage it's self, as on the 3-series of that same year... there are notorious problems with the guages.

 Check the sending unit, and see if it's the problem, if it's not, then you'll probably need to pull out the cluster and fix the guage.
