BMW Repair: Car wont start 1999 bmw 328i, mileage cars, aluminum metal

Question
"Night before the car was driving fine, I didn’t see any lights come on
the dashboard, park the car and the next morning the car started for a
second and then shutoff, try to started again no luck, I jump started
the car and drove for 5 miles, radio and a/c unit kip turning on and
off, the car it self was staling.
I changed the alternator and no luck try to start wont start, try to
jump started, wont even jump start, the car has 110 000 miles and I never
have a problem before, I am thinking maybe need to change the spark
plugs and cables or should I take the car to the shop.

Answer
John, Spark plugs, Front Oxygen sensor, and fuel filter should all be changed at 100,000miles or earlier as part of proper maintenance. Does the starter turn the motor over at normal cranking speed? Disconnect an intake hose (like at the brake booster) and spray a couple quick squirts of starting fluid or brake cleaner and try to crank the engine. If the engine starts or sputters then you have a lack of fuel issue. Try tapping on the idle valve just above the throttle valve with a long extension and a hammer. The idle valve is a silverish aluminum metal T-shaped valve that can get clogged or stuck with carbon on higher mileage cars. If this causes the car to start and run normally then either remove the valve and replace it or clean it with solvent. Also Clean the throttle body while you have it accessed. The black intake boot toward the intake has a little off-shute piece that cracks on the bend, but more importantly feeds air directly to the idle valve bypassing the throttle body. (replace the boot if cracked or torn). If this helps please fill out a follow up survey for me or report back if it doesn't.
