BMW Repair: 1993 325i Fuel Smell in cab of car, phillips head screws, oval plate

Question
Hi Michael,
When I fill up the car either 1/2 tank or 3/4 tank I smell gas in the cabin of the car. I have spoken w/ my mechanic and he said the fuel line was gummed up and cut it down some. I am still having this problem and have noticed that I smell the fuel in the trunk as well. There are no visible apparent leaks. Is there something else that can be checked?
Thx,
Lisa

Answer
More than likely it is a fuel sender/pump.  the best way to check is to remove the bottom portion of the rear seat (the front pulls upward and is retained by two clips);  Then pull back the  black sound insulating material to expose a oval plate with 4 phillips head screws.  Remove these screws (from both sides) and observe the senders as the vehicle is running or after filling up the tank.  This is a common problem.
let me know what you find!
