BMW Repair: 1995 540I Auto shift handle, nylon rod, set screw

Handle will not move out of park, just happened.  The spring has been gone for 2 years on the switch underneath the handle but today is seems the shift hadle is locked in place.  How can I remove this to get it into gear?

Answer
The shifter handle has a set screw that comes in from the front. Try removing the handle and internal nylon rod.If it still wont go into gear remove the shifter surround by prying up on the back to release the clips and slidding it to the rear to remove.
Let me know what you find.
Note that the nylon rod has a hole in the top that fits into the lever inside the shifter handle before installing it.
