Auto Insurance Claims: Car Insurance, present insurance company, current insurance company

Question
I was in a no-fault accident recently after moving to another state. My current carrier doesn't write in this state and it's only good until Mar 20. Since my insurance is not having to pay out, can I change insurance companies before the damage is repaired?

Answer
Hi Tim,

If you moved to another state you have 30 days to change insurance companies. If you have an accident within those 30 days, your current insurance company has to pay for the damage.

If you purchase coverage with another insurance company, they will not pay for your repairs since the damage occured prior to being insured with them. It would be like trying to buy house insurance when your house is on fire.

So if your accident was within the 30 days of moving to another state, you need to call your present insurance company and tell them that they have to pay for the damage. If they still say no then hire an attorney. If if the accident happened after 30 days then you will have to pay for the repairs out of your own pocket.

I hope this helps
