BMW Repair: BMW startup fault, automatic tranny, 1986 bmw 325

I just swapped a good automatic tranny from a 1989 bmw 325i into my 1986 bmw 325. I left the 86 flywheel in & swapped the driveline(the 89 need the 3 bolt with a guibo). Alright, when I try to turn the key, it wants to turn,  but the flywheel doesn't catch & is a bit loud. Is the starter kaput? or something else?

I am not sure if there are any differences between parts on these cars. Does the starter turn, but not catch the flywheel? Or does it sound like it is grinding. The starter could possibly be hanging up, and is not throwing the gear all the way out to catch the flywheel.
