BMW Repair: Transmission, solenoid pack, bmw 325i

I have a 1993 BMW 325I. Today the light on my dash which is yellow, looks like a gear with a question mark came on. I have a slow accelaration but eventually it picks up speed. I parked my car for an hour or so, got back in drove it around and the light didnt come back on. Later I was driving for awhile and then the light came back on and the same slow start happened again but eventually when I get going the speed picks back. What does this mean.

If its the light i think it is, the automatic transmission is going into a default shift stratagy in order to get it to the shop, in affect a "limp home" mode.  The ECU runs a series of checks on the solenoid pack when starting the vehicle then continues to monitor the system as you drive.  Should something be out of spec, the computer shuts down what it feels may be affected to prevent more damage.
Have the codes pulled, it should tell you exactly why it has been turning on.
