The problem appears to be in the volume contrtol.  Most of the time, it is so low I can bearly hear it at full volume.  Then, for no apparent reason, it plays full blast.  Then, it will shut off, for no apparent reason.  Could it be in the amplifier?  Any suggestion on how to diagnose?  Thanks.

does the stereo appear to be on when it has no sound?  if the stereo is shutting off than it is most likely the problem.  If the sound is the only thing fadeing in and out then you need to check the signal coming off the amp and the signal coming from the stereo to compair their amplitude.  It's not likely the amp would play low then high then no volume, it sounds more to me like the stereo (head unit) or a bad wire/s somewhere.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply.  The stereo does not shut down.  What steps and what equipment do I need to check for the ampltude.  I know the amplifier is in the trunk, but how do I remove the radio?  Thanks again.
Bill

Answer
First check the ground on the amp.  After looking at a wiring diagram figure out what lead going into the amp is from the stereo and test it, if you have good signal than the problem is in the amp or possibly a crossed wire at one of the speakers.  It's hard to diagnose a sparatic problem.

I'm not sure how to take out the stereo but I am relatively sure it requires a special tool.
