QUESTION: HI TIM, ANY IDEA HOW MUCH THIS WILL COST ME? IS IT EASILY REPLACED BY A "BACK YARD" MECHANIC? OR IS THIS A DEALERSHIP FIX? ALSO I THINK IT MAY NEED RACK AND PINION ON ONE SIDE AS IT DOES NOT TURN LEFT AS EASY AS TURNING RIGHT? IS THAT A CORRECT CONSUMPTION AND A COST TO FIX THAT? BEING A WOMAN ID LIKE TO KNOW A BIT OF WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT IF I HAVE TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP. IM CONSIDERING TRADING IT IN, YOU HAVE ANY OPINIONS? THANKS FOR HELP....

Answer
i believe the cost of the compressor isaaround $500 and I charge 1.5hours to install, its not too terribley difficult to install, the rear splash sheild needs to be loosened and there are two bolts that hold the compressor to the frame. As for the steering issue, first question for you is, does this vehicle have selectable 4 wheel drive?  If it does, what setting is it on when the steering is stiff?  If it is in AWD mode, and the pavement is drive, that can cause stiff steering.  If it is the gear I can check further on pricing, but it is labor intensive and we charge roughly 4.5 hours plus alignment to replace it.  As for trading it in, I guess that depends what you would want to replace it with, I work at a GMC dealer and they do not make the Envoy any longer, which is really a shame, they really worked all the bugs out to where it was a very dependable and good truck.  I would not reccommend an Acadia, lots of problems and terrible gas mileage, worse than your V8 Envoy.  There is a new truck they came out with that is smaller than the Acadia, its called the terrain, so far reviews are good.  Let me know if I can be of any further assistance, glad I could help in some way, have a nice day, nice to have met you kym
