GMC Repair: 1997 Buick Rivera Steering Column, steering column, steering wheel

Question
I am working on a 1997 Buick Rivera, a guy came to me today with this issue.

His steering column was stuck in place when he arrived and while I was replacing a stop light switch for him I moved the steering wheel and everything broke loose. This car has been wrecked some what (perhaps not wrecked but ruined). The column moves in all directions from up to down and left to right without pushing anything, in a circular motion if you want. The tilt has no control over it, it still turns the wheels just fine its just a matter of getting it to stay staionary. I'm hoping its a bolt or weld that can be remedied easily. If you have any ideas please let me know what parts are called I do have a subscription to alldatapro.com but I don't know what the parts are called to fix.

Thank you in advance for any reply

Answer
if the car has been wrecked there is a good chance the steering column has been collapsed, if that is the case it is junk, otherwise there is a possibility that a bolt has broken from the bulkhead where the column bolts to, which also could be due to the collosion, if you remove the hush panels you should be able to see the bolts that hold the column in plance to determine if that is the issue.  If they are secure, its going to need a steering column
