GMC Repair: GMC Yukon Reverse Issue, gmc yukon, bang car

Question
98 GMC Yukon 5.7L.  Was reversing into my driveway (as ? b/4 by someone else), however, was in regular drive.  Heard a loud "pop"/"bang".  Car will not reverse.  Will drive forward in D but sounds as if in Low gear.  Can shift to Low and still note a change, however, no gear btw D and L.  When in P/N/R very faint light "hissing" noise is the best that I can describe it as.  Has about 160,000 miles, well maintained, except never change trans. fluid b/c was suggested not to unless it was done on scheduled intervals.  Please help.  Don't have any idea except what I have read up on (reaction shell/linkage/full rebuild).  To make matters worst, machanic just retired and have no other person to trust for their honest repair or that won't rip me off and take advantage.  Desperate!  Thank you!!

Answer
I would HIGHLY suspect the reaction shell. When they go, it is VERY similar to the symptoms you described.
As much as I hate to tell you, thats where I would venture my best guess.
I would consider you checking on the price of a SRTA (serta) which is a GM remanufactured transmission. They are a bit more pricy, but they have new updated parts, and again, check with dealer/installer, but I am pretty sure it is a 3yr 50,000 warranty, which aint bad at all.
I know personally, we / I sell quite a few on the warranty alone.
Again as I always state, best advice would be to have it checked by a good tranny shop in your area. Get referrals from friends/family/coworkers.
I hope this helps
Good Luck
