GMC Repair: 2002 GMC SONOMA PART TIME 4X4 NO REVERSE, gmc sonoma, salvage yard

Question
HI WHAT I HAVE IS EXTRA CAB SONOMA SL V6 VORTEC, TRANSMISSION 4 SPEED AUTOMATIC. 170,000 MILES JUST GOT IT SO I DON'T KNOW MUCH BACKGROUND EXCEPT WAS A COMPANY TRUCK SOLD CHEAP COULD NEED A TRANNY. BUT I AM NOT COMPLAINING FOR THE PRICE. IT SHIFTS FINE BUT IT SKIPS 2ND AND MAYBE 3RD BUT CRUSES FINE IN THE HIGH GEAR. THERE IS NO REVERSE IT IS AS IF IT IS IN NEUTRAL. THERE IS NO CLUNK OR GRIND AT ALL JUST A SOFT WHINE WHILE IN PARK ALSO IN REVERSE. SO WHAT DOES THIS SOUND LIKE TO YOU COMPLETE OVERHAUL OR AN EASIER FIX.
THANKS ALOT

Answer
Hi
Sounds like the reaction shell (sun shell) is stripped.
It is an easy fixfor any tranny tech. It would be much cheaper than a rebuilt SRTA tranny. I would price a rebuilt unit from like a tranny shop or maybe even a salvage yard used unit.
I would think you looking at over $1000 - 1500 for repair, DEPENDING on the labor rate in your area.
Hope this helps
