GMC Repair: 97 GMC Sierra ABS, vehicle speed sensor, gmc sierra

Question
I have a 1997 GMC K1500 Sierra with the 5.7 350. About 5 months ago, i started having issues with the ABS system. It all started by my ABS light staying on a little longer than normal at startup, but always went off. Then about a month later, at about 20 - 15 mph., the ABS would randomly kick on, and make the ABS light flash. Now, the ABS light is on all the time, and i do not have Anti-Locks. I was wondering if you had experienced this problem before, and could point me in the right direction, so i'm not completely surprise when i eventually get the code read. And, do the ABS sensors count axle splines on these trucks?

Answer
Hi
I would advice taking it and having the ABS system scanned for codes.
This will lead you to the direct fault without guesses.
There are MANY different codes that can cause the light to come on.
MOST chain repair shops and auto parts stores offer free scanning.
The ABS does not "count" splines. The front Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS) are a magnetic coil/pickup type. Each WSS produces an AC voltage signal which is transmitted to the EBCM in order to indicate how fast the wheel is turning. The speed of the wheel is directly proportional to the frequency and amplitude of the wheel speed signal.
The rear speed signal is generated by the Vehicle Speed Sensor located in the Transmission (or transfer case if 4wd). The signal is then sent to the Vehicle computer (VCM) and then transmitted to the EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) on a dedicated circuit.
I Hope this helps
