GMC Repair: 97 Jimmy, fuel level sender, fuel system treatment

My gas gage does not work.Is there a few simple things I can try before I get it torn apart by a costly mechanic?

The only thing I can think of is you can try a bottle of
GM Fuel System Treatment Plus (P/N 88861011 [in Canada, P/N 88861012]).
It MAY help, well lets say it wont hurt. Follow the instructions.
I have also heard, you may want to research this, but I have heard there is some sort of aftermarket device that you can splice into the fuel level sender wires.
Then somehow, you fill the tank, and set this device it learns full and empty.
As I stated, I have ONLY heard of these devices. I have personally never seen one or really even know if they exsist. Just heard some others speaking of them.
Other than that, as much as I hate to say, the tank unit will need to be repalced.
