GMC Repair: 98 GMC Envoy Headlight, high intensity discharge, arc tube

Question
My driver's side headlight is out, and at first I believed it was an aftermarket product, but it has a GM part # which is 16524491. It's some kind of HID headlight and is extremely expensive. I cannot just buy a bulb. Are there any cheaper alternatives than paying hundreds for this light? Or am I misjudging the extent of the problem? Thanks.

Answer
Hi
As much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, it looks like you'll have to either purchase the  High Intensity Discharge Headlamp Starter/Arc Tube assy.
I can honestly say, I have NEVER even seen one of these on this vehicle. I see the procedure in the service manual, so it did come with it.
Alternatives?....I would hate to tell you something that would not work without doing it myself...
HOWEVER if a regular bulb can fit into the hole for that low beam, IT LOOKS LIKE you COULD use a regular bulb, just would have to get the bulb connector and splice it into the existing harness, for the left side yellow is 20a fused hot and black is ground, so it should be OK to burn a regular lamp, IF the bulb can fit into headlamp capsule.
I hope this helps.
I wish I could help more.
Good Luck
