GMC Repair: compound question, blown head gasket, gmc z71

Question
my 93 gmc Z71 jerks hard when it makes the first gear shift, then it shifts smoothley. Could it be anything other than transmission trouble?  Also, if coolant is coming from the top of the engine, does it mean a blown head gasket?  Th

Answer
Hi
First with tranny, check the fuel filter.
If it is OK, I would check all other tune up items (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter)and do some maintance.
AFTER:
Second - Coolant on top of engine could very well be the Intake manifold gaskets leaking, OR the heater bypass fitting (nipple)located on the passenger side all the way on top back of engine.
Best advice here is to get the cooling system pressure tested, so leak can be positivly identified.
If you do all this and the first/second shift is still hard, then it COULD be an internal transmission problem.
I wouldrecommend doing a trans. flush service AND replace the filter assy.
I hope this helps.
Just advice from experience.
Good Luck
