Hello, first off I appreciate what you guys do here. I have a 1981 GMC Sierra Grande. I am the second owner, the first owner bought it brand new and died in 87. It has sat since 2 months ago (they used it once a year to move bails). Something is wrong with the choke. If it's not warm outside, at cold startup it chugs and seems to be flooding itself. It starts fine, and then it seems the choke ( opens? closes? )  and it starts flooding itself. In order to stop this, I have to drive and let it warm up. When being driven like this it runs like total crap. It keeps wanting to die, and then after w while it backfires (usually when downshifting). After it backfires it runs perfect. When it's warmed up its fine aswell (driving on the highway for a bit). Now, when it's hot out and i start it, it idles high at around 1100 RPM. Idles fine but runs kind of sluggish untill I warm it up, then it idles at 500rpm and no problems. When the truck is running correctly, and say if I stomp on it (usually does this when I spin the tires on pavement, or accelerate quickly) it starts flooding itself again. I sprayed the choke and whole carb down with carbcleaner. I can't take the black cover off the choke because it's held on my 3 rivets.  People are saying it's just the spring inside of there. I don't know what else to do, I don't have the funds to take it to a shop to get it looked at. Any ideas? Thanks alot.

Where would the heat tube be located? Where is the vaccuum line located? Are you sure it's not the choke?

Answer
hello
the heat tube runs from the manafold to carb. as the vac. system.
I not say the choke is not the problem the vac and heat make the choke work.
you can by a manuial choke and hook it up and u will never have any more problems the choke kit is 10 dollors at any parts store
