1998 GMC Sierra truck k1500
Interior lights do not always go out after door is closed or keyring lock is used. Sometimes dome light will go out after a few seconds , other times light stays on indefinetely. I use the dome overide switch to get lights to go out but once this is pressed in , I have no interior lights automatically when door is opened. Exterior cargo lamp is not available  either when this is used. Both Door jam  switches appear functional. Is there some delay switch module or something to check /replace that is faulty and  causes interior lights to sometimes work correctly? Thanks

Hi,Bob
Sounds like there is an intermitten short to ground or an open in the door jam switch ckts,my question is i need to find out about the door jam switches,GMC changed mid year of 98,if you could tell me is the door jam switches located on the side of the dash has a push pin that the door activates?or is the door jam switches located inside the door itself, meaning there isnt a door jam switch that protrudes from the sides of the dash, let me know as that will help in me diagnosing the proper interior lamps sys. Thanks

ED

The door jam switch is the push button style on the side of the dash that the door pushes in when closed. I had another person respond to this question who had same problem on their '98 and they replaced this jam switch which fixed the problem for them. I have done this and still have same thing so door switch is good. The light will go out and works for a few times but then I will notice, sometimes an hour later, the interior lights have just come on for no reason. Or sometimes will just not go out at all until dome overide is pushed.  That is why I thought maybe something wrong with some timer delay switch that pertains to the length the lights stay on before shut off.
Does the body control module work these lights and/or responsible for shutoff?  Thanks for the help.

Hi,Bob

I did some research on this, according to the ckts what controls the interior lamps dimming is the headlamp dimmer switch this uses an internal {clock} that enables and disables the interior lamps or the dimming feature, also ive seen a couple of cases that the remote keyless module was failing and causing inadvertant activation of the interior lamps,it is located under the left of the dash left of the steering column, try disconnecting the remote keyless entry module and see if everything is normal,if it is then thats at fault,if its still the same then the headlamp/dimmer switch is internaly failing,as long as the pin switches and wiring to them are ok,hope this helps, contact me on what you find,Thanks

Ed,
Good Grief! Looked and looked for the keyless control module and can't be sure of where / what it is. Only thing I found that may be it was a metal rectangular box about 2"x4" that is along left side of steering column but almost impossible to unplug what looks like a big wire connector harness. I suspect this is some kind of control module but what?  As I re-read your message about the headlamp switch having the internal clock ,maybe it would be logical to change this out first. Although the dash must be pulled apart somewhat , it still looks more possible to change this switch rather than trying to test the keyless relay one first. Do you have any description ,part # , or more info on what to even look for on this keyless relay switch ? Reading another GMC tech site , the description of the keyless relay location was on the top right of the steering column, I checked all around and from both your and this other description and could not identify for sure.  Also if I actually identify this to disconnect it , I will not lose programming or anything will I?
Thanks -Bob

Answer
Bob,

Yes that small metal box is the keyless entry module,i cant give you the part number because i would need your VIN,the module has changed numbers 4 times since its production, also you should not loose programing by disconnection, only if you change the module will you need to reprogram and i can show you how to do that if you do.
Logically yes it maybe easier to replace the headlamp/dimmer switch, that is up to you,i dont think they are to expensive, but the module for the keyless entry is high in price, also there have been more cases leading to the switch then the module, you could be on the right track to solving your problem, :) i am curious myself, let me know what you find please.
