I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy,4x4,4.3L,4 door.
Fuel guage is very eratic. Sometimes it will not go any further down than 3/4 of a tank from full. Other times it goes to 1/2 tank and then slowly rises back towards full. It will also go to 1/4 tank and then the needle starts swinging back and forth. I'm guessing sending unit? Loose connection? I really don't want to pull the fuel tank but i guess i will if i need to. What else can I check? Thanks for your time

Answer -
Sounds like loose electrical GROUND connection and or a problem with the sending unit or the baffle that is mounted inside of the gas tank has come loose.

What mechanical work or ANY kind of work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made as a  wire connection came loose, Look around in the area where work was performed..

The only work that has been done in the last year was replacing the ignition switch. I had to replace this because there were days when the engine light would come on and stay on. It would give me all kinds of different failure codes and all the dash lights would start flashing and going nuts. all guages would either work or go nuts. Since i replace the switch I have had no problems. But I will definitely go back and check my work. As far as checking for a loose Ground connection are there connections on top of the fuel tank or do the wires just pass through a bulk head fitting?
I do appreciate your time

Answer
There is usually a ground wire that comes out of the harness near the fuel tank and attaches to the vehicles frame near the gas tank.

If the ground is OK, Your problem is most likely the sending unit or a loose baffle in the tank.

Double check your work under the dash as there are ground wires for the dash gages
