GMC Repair: 1987 GMC safari van, spark plug wires, gmc safari

Question
The engine was not getting gas before or after replacement of the distributor. We were told that it might be the ignition module. Where we live, there are two service stations and both of them guess at what they are doing, so diagnostics of the problem could cost us mega bucks... hope you can walk us thru this problem.

We replaced the whole distributor and the engine doesn't seem to be getting gas. Checked to see if the coil wire and spark plugs are recieving spark and they are. Engine turns over but is not firing. Any suggestons? Thanking you in advance for your efforts...C Bray I tried to email you at meperganfortis@msn but the system wouldn't recognize your address, maybe I didn't have the complete address. Is there a .com or .ca following the msn at the end?

Question -
I have a 1987 GMC Safari van. The other day after shutting it off before going into a store, it wouldn't start and wasn't firing when I tried to start it. I could smell gas so I knew it wasn't the problem. It wouldn't start so I had it towed home. A while later it started when I tried it , but was really chugging. I started it the next morning and it started right away, running rough. Do you have any idea where I start to look to fix this? Someone told me there is a little module close to or part of the distributor that may be the problem. Also how many gas line filters would this vehicle have and where are they located? Your input would be much appreciated. Thanking you in advance for your trouble in regards to this problem...C Bray
Answer -
Is the vehicle FUEL INJECTED or is it CARBURATED ?.

Answer -
If the vehicle has the old style distributor with the spark plug wires coming out of the top of the distributor cap your most likely suspect would be either the IGNITION MODULE and or the PICKUP COIL.

Answer -
In your FIRST question you ststed you could SMELL GAS so this is not the problem.

In your SECOND question you said you replaced the distributor and it's NOT getting GAS.

which is it ?.

Answer
I can't help you unless you give me the information that I keep asking for and am NOT getting.

Perform this test:

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.

However, Sometimes if you continously try and start the engine 3 timse for 15 seconds continously and the vehicle starts, the fuel pump relay may be the fault.

QUESTIONS:

1. Can you physically see fuel being sprayed into the intake from BOTH fuel injectors when trying to start the engine ?

2. Are the electrode ends of the spark plugs fouled with gas and or covered in a black soot ?.

3. Are you POSITIVE your getting spark from the spark plug wires to the spark plugs ?.

4. If you hold the spark plug wire about 3/4" from any metal surface when trying to start the engine can you physically see a BLUE spark jump the approx 3/4" gap ?.

If you spray a little starting fluid into the intake manifold will the engine TRY and START ?.

I need the above ANSWERS.
