GMC Repair: 94 LeSabre Tranny, metal debris, pressure gage

Question
I've had a tranny issue for a while with my 94 LeSabre custom.  It's the 4T60E, and i've read a little on what can go wrong.  It all started as what felt like my car having a seisure when i hit 4th gear, and slowly worked its way to slipping gears, etc.  The odd part is, occasionally i would lose all power, and the car would just shut itself off.  When i was in drive.  That's something i had not heard of before.  Also, when accelerating from a stop, the car would jerk a lot.  Almost as if it was a fuel injection problem, but even after putting in top-grade fuel and fuel cleaner, it would not go away.  I now have only my first gear, which means the transmission is not completely out, but there's somethign very wrong with it.  It accelerates fine, and feels like it is attempting to go into second, but only sometimes.  It's almost as if it is stuck in first, and isn't trying to get out. Could it be sensors causing a problem?  Could I have problems with pressure control selanoids?  Any advice would be great to have, as i don't feel like dropping another $1500 into a car that isn't worth that much as it is.

Answer
Is the trans fluid dark in color and or smell burnt ?.

The FIRST thing that needs to be done is to have a pressure gage installed on the pressure port of the trans to see what pressures the trans is developing at the different shift positions.

The prseeures will pretty much tell you what area(s) of the trans is your problem.

next would be to drop the trans pan and see if there is any metal debris within the pan and on the filter screen.

Possible problems could be:

1. valve body problems.
2. a restriction in one of the trans case oil channels.
3. shift solenoid problems.
4. 2-4 servo problem.
5. 2-4 band assembly problem.
6. A fault with the pressure switch assembly.

There is really no way to tell without pressure testing the trans and then in most cases tearing it down.

Although retired, I still teach transmission repair. We only charge COST of the parts plus $100.00 labor.

If you want to remove the trans from the vehicle and ship it out here to New Mexico we would be more than happy to check it out for you and advise you if it is worth fixing.

IF you ship the trans out to us, we will check it out and advise you of what the problem is and the cost to fix it. If it is NOT worth fixing, We will put it back together and you would have to pay to have it shipped back to you or we will just keep it and you can purchase one locally.

All you would be out is the shipping cost to us if you did not want it back if the cost is to excessive.
