I have a 2000 Blazer with very little miles on it.  I cannot get any hot air out of the heater.  Took it to the dealer and now they want to charge $1500 to replace heater core due to corrosion caused by air getting into the system possible through the radiator cap and blocking the system.  I am not convinced this problem will go away.  Any advice?

You stated: " corrosion caused by air getting into the system possible through the radiator cap and blocking the system.

This is ONE I have not heard yet, It is unique.

Are BOTH heater hoses HOT to the touch when the engine is at normal operating temperature ?.

What mechanical work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made.

IF you have corrosion in the heater core it wouls show up when you drained out the coolin system of anti-freeze.

Is the temperature gage on the dash reading NORMAL or it it reading LOW ?. If it is reading LOW you could have a thermostat that is stuck in the FULLY OPEN position.

Let me know.

Both heater hoses are hot to the touch.  Engine temp gets up to 190 degrees after 1/2 hr. of road driving.  No other recent mechanical work done.  They did show me a jar of the Dex-Cool (red anti-freeze) with some contamination in the bottom that they said came from my vehicle.  I mentioned the thermostat when I dropped off the vehicle, but they don't seem to think that is the problem.  The dealer is convinced it is air getting into the system causing the Dex-Cool to react abnormally.  Thanks for your thoughts!

Answer
I STILL have my DOUBTS. IF they are CONVINCED, I'm NOT, That the heater core is at fault and you decide that you will have them replace the heater core, Make SURE that on the repair order you indicate IN WRITING, That you want the OLD heater core RETURNED to you.

You will most likely get some STORY that they can't return the OLD one as it has to be returned to where they bought the new one from OR you will have to pay a CORE CHARGE.

What I would do is call a couple of local auto parts stores and ask about purchasing a heater core for your vehicle and ASK about this CORE CHARGE.

If I were you, I would be VERY CAREFUL about getting taken to the CLEANERS.

A SECOND or THIRD opinion by different facilities is warranted and do NOT tell the other facilities what the dealer told you.
