My question concerns hard 1st to 2nd shifting. I own a 2000 GMC Sierra 2500. The truck has 107k miles and has been well maintained. After any freeway driving I will experience hard shifts (especially from 1st to 2nd). The hard shifting will go away if I shut the truck off and then restart it. This hard shifting only happens after freeway driving, otherwise the truck shifts smoothly. I have heard several theories concerning this phenomenon. Thanks for your time.

Answer -
THEORIES and GUESSES I can give you, EXACT cause will require driving and testing.

Some possibilities are: (depending upon TYPE of transmission)

1. Intermittent sticking of the 1-2 shift valve.
2. intermittent operation of the 1-2 shift solenoid.
3. Intermittent fault in the shift control module.

When was the last time you had the trans fluid changed ?.

Answer
OK, But you did NOT tell me that in your initial question, So I had to ask.

You are at the point that requires professional testing of the various components that I mentioned earlier.

Without actually driving the vehicle myself, An exact cause is most impossible, GUESSES, I can give you all day long if you want to start replacing parts in HOPES of getting lucky.

I wish I could tell you EXACTLY what component is at fault but since I have no access to the vehicle, I can only advise you to have a trans shop or your loacl dealer perform the road test.
