Which fan would help a 1996 Sierra GMC dually 1 ton 6.5 L engine truck. We have 4wd also.It has auto trans.  We pull a 37 ft. horse trailer and the engine gets hot when going up steep inclines.  We need some sort of Auxiliary cooling fan.  Could you help?
Answer -
Absolutely, I have a 1994 Ford dually and I also pull a heavy trailer. However I do NOT have any problems.

How many miles are on the vehicle ?. Vehicles in excess of 100,000 miles or close to it usually have radiators that tend to start failing internally and should be replaced with a NEW radiator and throw yours in the trash.

You can purchase from a ford dealer an AUXILIARY electric cooling fan that mounts onto pre-existing holes already made for it's installation. The wiring harness also plugs into a terminal block also pre-installed by the factory.

You can buy cheaper auxiliary cooling fans that you will have to drill holes in order to mount the fan and you will have to identify and splice in the wiring for the fan as it will NOT usually plug into the manufacturers terminal block.

I opted to spend the extra money and get the manufacturers setup as it was easy to install and looks more professional.

If you have a mechanical fan on the engine, Did you TEST the FAN CLUTCH as they also have a tendency to get weak.

Let me know what you decide to do. My FIRST item would be to REPLACE the radiator per above.

I really appreciate your help.  I did not mention that this truck is a diesel. It has 170,000 miles on it. I noticed that you recommended a ford dealer, this truck is a GMC. Thanks again.

Answer
OOPPSSS !. I had Ford on the brain. Gm vehicles are OK, I guess, I own 3 of them besides my ford dually.

I would definately replace the radiator with a NEW one.

Also on the Diesels, Of which you FORGOT to mention, When fuel flow gets LOW on volume and or pressure this can also cause overheating as well as injector pump timing being off.
