97 GMC Safari The back hatch won't release
on the one side
Answer -
Is this a MECHANICAL release hatch or an ELECTRICAL release hatch ?.

Where are the latch(s) located in reference to the hatch ?.

Each and every year GM as well as the rest of the manufacturer's change the design of most of there components and trying to keep track of every change without actually seeing the problem is quite difficult.

Since this is a rarity, I doubt that I can give you any specific repair procedure, But I will try if you have pictures and can answer the above questions for me.

I think it would be mechanical but unlatches with a remote on the key chain. The latches are 2 thirds of the way down on a dutch door.

Answer
NO, This would make them electrical and mechanical as there would be 2 electric type solenoids that are wired to a CONTROL MODULE of which is why you have a REMOTE CONTROL on your key chain. The latches can also be opened with a standard key via bypassing the electrical portion of the release.

Does the hatch open OK using the key ?. Is there an interior button possibly in the glove box that also opens the hatch thus utilizing the electrical portion of the release latches ?.
