GMC Repair: 1988 GMC Jimmy s15, autohelp, final diagnosis

Question
My daughters car is stalling out, It will start up fine and when she puts it in drive or reverse it dies, sometimes when she pulls up to a stop sign or light it will also die on her. I took it to a shop and they had it on the scope for most of the day telling us to replace the distributor, so we had them do that. we are still having the same problems. we were told by a friend to keep the fuel over 1/2 tank and it should run better. well maybe it has run a lil better with keeping  1/2 tank at all times.

What size engine ?.

Remind me NOT to take my vehicle where you took this one. These people scare me.

Anyway, There are a few probabilities and your problem is quite common.

The most common faults are:

Normal residue buildup within the IDLE AIR BY-PASS chambers that can easily be removed using an aerosol can of carb cleaner thus spraying it into the above said chambers. Several applications are usually required to clean out the passages.

There is also the quite common problem of the well known starting to fail fuel pump of which is in the fuel tank. There is also the probability of a leak within the rubber hose that connects the fuel pump to the fuel pickup tube also within the fuel tank.

There are numerous other possible fault items but these are the most common.

If you would be so kind, When you locate and correct your problem, Please let me know what you found to be the cause as I keep personal records so I can see which cause is becoming more prevalent.
