Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray 10 HP Snowblower, worm gearbox, drive chains

Question
After running my snowblower for about 1 hour today, I noticed small drops of oil/black substance trailing in the snow....coming from underneath.  Does the Murray 10 HP have a history of oil leaks?  Is there oil in the worm gear mechanism? The snowblower is about 6 years old. Thank you!!!

Answer
There is no particular problem I am aware of.  There are usually only two areas where oil is the lubricant.  The engine is the first area where a leak can occur and the (worm)gearbox that transmits power to the larger primary augers contains a lubricant that is similar to gear lube (there may be a specific type recommended for your blower).  The first thing you need to do to detect a leak is thoroughly degrease and clean the engine and the gearbox.  Then use the blower as usual and inspect for the source of the leak.  Another possibility is, if someone just serviced this blower for you, chainlube coming off one of the drive chains within the drive assembly.  Hope this helps.
