Alfa Romeo Repair: Alfa 145 2ltr cloverleaf, alfa 145, maf sensor

Question
Hi..hope you can help me.

I bought a 145 2ltr cloverleaf a few months ago with 57k on the clock with the last service done at roughly 54k. It now has nearly 62k on it and has developed a few problems:

1 - car doesnt sit idle at all. Revs drop as low as 500rpm ( either the red injector light comes on to keep it at this rpm or the car cuts out) and goes as high as 3k, always fluctuating between. This happens at first start up and after the car has been running.
2- whilst driving ( at any speed or rpm) the red injector light will come on and off irregularly. This cuts all throttle response for a couple of seconds but then the power kicks back in quite aggressively (you can imagine how bad this has become going around roundabouts and overtaking etc).
3 - When accelerating over the 5.5 rpm mark i can hear a crackling-rattling noise that sounds like its coming from the gear selector area.

I am going to have the car serviced very soon, spark plugs, cam belt etc... but is there anything else i should have checked while this is being done??

any feedback would be very much appreciated... Thanks

Answer
Have them clean the battery terminals for sure.

Then, with electrical contact cleaner, they should clean the maf sensor. Not the bulb you can see through the main tube, that is the temp sensor. There is another channel that houses the actual maf sensor, that is where the contact cleaner should be sprayed. Also, unplug the electrical plug several times that is on the side of the maf sensor.

If that does not cure the problem then we go to phase 2.
