Alfa Romeo Repair: Spider Oil Leak, head gasket leak, valve covers

Question
My 1984 Spider has 110k miles, is well-cared for, runs well, has good compression, and has been leaking more and more engine oil on my garage floor as the years go by.  It drops oil from under the engine to back to the middle of the transmission, kind of all over the place.  I think it's coating the tranny underside due to blowback during driving.  I don't know where it's coming from, although I think it's mostly from one spot, not many.  It's not transmission oil.  I'm afraid it may be the engine head gasket.  Is it likely the head gasket could leak that much oil from the back of the engine?  Or do you think it might be something easier (and cheaper) to fix?

Answer
Start at the valve covers and work your way down at the rear of the engine. If the cylinder head has never been retorqued then it could very well be a head gasket leak. But, first check to see if the valve covers leak or the rear main seal is the problem. You do this by seeing where the top most sign of oil is.
