the steering is hard too.
is it possible to fix those inconvenients?
thank you.

Answer
Hi George,

If your shifter meets resistance going into second but doesn't grind, then it might be a shift fork out of adjustment or the trunions on the top of the gearbox might be dry or worn out.  The former requires disassembly and rebuild and the latter can be repaired by removing the shift console or boot and checking the two bearings (trunions) that support the shifter.
If it grinds going in, then it's worn synchronizers and the transmission will require a rebuild.  Sometimes changing to a synthetic lubricant can cure lots of ills also.

Your steering can be a lot of different things also.  I suggest you find a shop that has a very qualified front end alignment man.  Usually a frame shop is the best bet for this rather than a tire shop.  Hard steering can be something as simple as under inflated tires or an alignment problem or it can also be a problem with the steering gearbox or even a binding shaft in the steering column.  The alignment man should be able to tell you where the problem lies.

It's possible to fix anything, of course.  How much you can do yourself, I can't answer.  These cars can be very reliable but are problematic also.

I don't know where you live, but I suggest you find an Alfa Club and join.  There are lots of people who love these cars and can help you keep yours running.  If you don't know where to look for a club, send me a note and let me know where you live and I'll research it for you.  I just recently found a club and even a guy in the same city for a guy with an old Alfa.  He is in Tel-Aviv, Israel.  There are Alfa clubs all over the world with an especially strong network in the USA.

Sorry I can't be more specific about your problems, but sometimes it's hard to troubleshoot without putting my hands on it.

Good luck... Neat car you have!
