Alfa Romeo Repair: 86 Alfa:clutch, clutch release, slave cylinders

Question
i just got an 86 Alfa (don't know much about it yet). I'm having a problem w/ the clutch, mostly 1st gear.  I practicly have to put the petal through the floor to get 1st gear in. Other gears are bad, but not that bad.
Also, how do I 'unfreese' a front-drivers side caliper?
Thanks.

Answer
First of all. Drain and flush the cooling system and add fresh anti-freeze 50/50 dilution. It has turned to a corrosive.

The clutch release is hydraulic and there is air in the system from leaking seals. It would be best to replace both the master and slave cylinders and replace the fluid with Castrol LMA.

The caliper must be removed from the system and a large pair of pliers may be able to compress the piston and break it loose from the corrosion. Obviously the car was not maintained or sat for a long time. Replace the brake fluid also with Castrol LMA (Napa also has LMA under their brand).
LMA is Low Moisture Absorbance.
