Alfa Romeo Repair: 156 selespeed, flashing light, negative cable

Question
hi i have a 156 sportswagon selespeed(2000),
a red flashing light came up on the dash, now i cant select any gears in city or manual, so i cant go anywere?
Please can you help?

Answer
You need access to a scanner to read the codes. You can try resetting the ecm to get to the dealer but it probably will not help for long. Disconnect the negative cable at the battery and touch it to the positive cable for 10 seconds. Then reattach the negative cable to the battery and start the engine.
