Alfa Romeo Repair: 82 Spider problem starting, spray pattern, gas tank

Question
If the regulator and injectors are fouled with debris, why was it runnig fine before I replace the corroded tank?  Can I disconnect the return line from the regulator to see if gas is exiting?  If it is not, could the main pump be faulty and not generating the required pressure?  What is the process to check the injectors?

thanks,

George

Question -
I just replaced a very corroded fuel tank and have a new fuel pump and tank sock and new fuel filter installed.  Put new gas in the tank and tried to start the car.  It tries to run, but dies after a few seconds.  If you depress the accelerator, it dies instantly.  It acts like it is not getting any fuel.  I pulled both intake and return lines and made sure they were clear. I am getting fuel from the pump in the tank to the main pump and the main pump is sending fuel through the filter, but not sure of the pressure.  The main pump is making loud whining noise.  Could the main pump be bad?

Note - the car was running week prior to work on the bad gas tank.

Answer -
Does any fuel come back on the return line. If not then the pressure regulator and injectors are clogged with debris.

The whine is probably because the pump is working too hard.

Answer
"running fine" is very subjective and misleading because a gradual deterioration of performance can easily go unnoticed.

Further, in any diagnosis knowing is better than thinking.
If you undo the return hose at the regulator and turn on the pump you will then know quite alot. If no fuel is coming back the next step is to check pump output, it should pump a pint in less than 20 seconds and if the pump output is blocked the pressure can go over 100psi.

To check the injectors remove the fuel rail with injectors and
activate each injector in turn. The spray pattern should be a fine mist with no solid stream of any kind. (the injectors use battery voltage [12 to 14 volts]).

I will be glad to help you with the next steps after these have been performed.
