Alfa Romeo Repair: Clutch & rear seal, 1600 engine, manual haynes, alfa shop

Question
Greetings,

The clutch on my 1967 Gulia GTV (1600) is slipping.  There is a lot of engine oil in the area aroud the bell housing so it seems clear that the rear engine seal is leaking and the driven disk is oil soaked.  I plan to pull the transmission (from below)to replace the clutch, throw-out bearing, etc. and would like to know if the rear engine seal can be removed/replaced with the engine in place.  I have the Alfa shop manual, Haynes, etc. but this procedure is not discussed.

Your assistance will be appreciated.

Cheers,
Bill

Answer
Yes. Be sure to soak the felt washer in hot engine oil for about an hour.  If you are given a dry bushing for the pilot bearing it must be soaked in really hot oil for half a day.
You will have to remove the pan to replace the rubber plugs in the rear main bearing.
