Alfa Romeo Repair: Starter: 1985 GTV6, manifold gaskets, volt drop

Question
How do I remove a starter from a 1985 GTV6? The starter is just clicking but there is plenty of "juice".  The battery is charged and all connections are clean. There is a heat shield on the starter.

Answer
The hold in coil has failed. Remove the exhaust manifold--it unbolts from the downpipe and the head and just (just) comes out. But first, do a volt drop test on the lead from the firewall to the solenoid of the starter. You put the positve lead of a digital multi meter at the firewall end of the cable and the negative lead connects at the solenoid. Then you have someone attempt to start and read the voltage while the starter circuit is engaged--you should see 1 volt or less--anything else means the cable is at fault. Now do the same from the engine block to the chassis to check the ground side. Then and only then should you go to the trouble of removing the starter.

Oh yeah, the exhaust manifold gaskets are only good for one use.
