Alfa Romeo Repair: car cranks wont start, bosch alternators, sparkplugs

Question
I wrote you a few days ago about this problem and followed your suggestions: check fuel pump and spark at spark plug. Everythings ok there. When I started the car the other day I noticed that after I had to crank several times when the car finally started the battery/alternator light was on for a few minutes. It went out after I stepped on the gas. Is it possible that the battery is the problem? If so, why would I get a good connection at one time and a bad connection another?
Thanks

Answer
As I understand your problem: the engine motors over with the starter but will not catch.  What you described concerning the alternator light is normal for Bosch alternators--They need an increase in rpm to 1500 or so before the exciter system goes to work.  And if the starter works--the charging system is not the problem.

Next check--after cranking for a goodwhile with no start, pull 2 sparkplugs and look for moisture (fuel) on the end.  This will tell you whether the injectors are opening.

If the injectors are working then you probabley have bad fuel or bad ignition timing.
