Alfa Romeo Repair: 75 Fuel Pump, alfa romeo, driving car

Question
Thx for help in advance as is a bit long...i turned to a few alfa romeo dealers and they did not know what is happening.

I have a very annoing problem with my fuel pump or what i believe is the fuel pump. Basically the engine does not recieve petroll. Starting from the beggining all the information is...

The car sometimes chooses to run sometimes not. It runs less frequently now as has not run for about two weeks. I drove it everyday for about a month between moments of not working.

There is no noise coming from pump unless i disconnect the wire going into the pump just before the fuel filter. Then a ticking noise comes from the fuel tank. This provides fuel to engine but not enough...(engine sounds closer to running then before).

If i connect a wire from the battery to this pump  next to filter it would work and the engine runs.

There is a small red box next to relays that has some sort of connection and i can short it to make the pump work.

I measured the voltages and current and resistance of that pump and they are 1.8ohms, .5V but when i short it then 12V and 4-5A.

I am afraid to run the pump by shortening a connection as i dont want to it overheat and blow the car as is down next to fuel tank.

I thought that maybe the pump was drawing too much current and so replaced it with a second hand one with no solution.

There are some connections behind the glove box that i connected better as the groung melted the plastic...the pink with white wire which was the same as the one going into pump was going thrue that connection. Still no solution.

I dont know what to do next and not sure where some connections or relays could be that i check.

Does the pump supposed to have a 12V connection allways? is there some security system with sensor that ecu can turn pump off? Is there danger with me driving car by shortening connection? Can the second hand pump also be bad and should i replace it for another?

Thx again

Answer
You have done a good job.  The problem is corroded connections and a faulty relay. Clean up the connections including the one with melted plastic and replace the relay. Put in new connectors or clean with wire brush and WD-40 and make sure connections are firmly tight. Also, it is time to replace the fuel filter.  A fuel pump that draws 4-5 amps is in good condition electrically. However, while you are at it test the pump for a minumun volumne of 16oz in 30" and pressure of at least 40psi.
