Alfa Romeo Repair: 2002 Spider 5 Speed Gearbox, automatic transmission fluid, speed gearbox

Question
Stephen, thanks for answering my question about the crunching in 4th gear of the Spider 5speed.  Fluid level is fine and not long after the problem started I changed the fluid. I refilled the box with Tetula synthetic oil, have done several hundred kms since and still no change. What do you mean by refilling with ATF? what is ATF? I think the Tetula oil was a 75W grade. Is it too light?

Answer
By ATF I mean automatic transmission fluid. If there is a problem with the bushings this treatment could cure it. But remember, you do the ATF bit with vehicle off the ground. And it could take up to a half hour running in fourth to fix it.

Using a 75w-90 synthetic oil is good.  A straight 75 grade oil would be too light for a transaxle. The container must say it is hypoid gear oil GL 5 or 6.

If the above does not do it then a teardown is required and depending on labor rates could be $600 to $1500 us dollars.
