Alfa Romeo Repair: Alfa 156 Starting when hot., alfa 156, volt drop

Question
Hi Stephen, I wondered if you could give me an idea of how to go about solving a problem with my 2001 156 2.0 Selespeed.

The car starts well from cold however, after a long run, when re-starting the engine, it turns very slowly before it catches (if at all). The battery is new and it seems to be getting plenty of charge.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks.

Answer
You have a ground problem. Check and clean the ground connection at the engine and the battery. Might as well clean the positive connection at the battery also.

If you have a volt meter you can also check the cable by doing a volt drop test. connect the positive lead of the meter to the starter body or the engine block, connect the negative lead of the meter to the neg. battery terminal.  Observe the meter while starting the engine. Any voltage over 0.5 is too much (0.3 is good).
