Alfa Romeo Repair: GTV6 Steering Noise, front wheel bearings, shift linkage

Question
My recently purchased GTV6 has a steering problem.  Sitting still in the garage, the steering effort required to turn the wheels lock to lock seems normal.  On the move, however, the effort increases exponentially once you begin turning in.  Turning left also produces a low-pitched groan (almost like a severely worn brake pad under heavy braking) that will go away when you apply the brake.  Car was represented as having 100k miles.  Also wondering if shift linkage is adjustable (this is my first GTV6, and I don't have the books yet.  Previously owned 73 GTV, et al).

Answer
The shift can be vague and can be firmed up a bit with judicious reassembly.

The front wheel bearings on the right are bad and on the left loose.  Replace all of them.  The outters are the same as on a FIAT which weighs 800lbs less.

Also replace the water pump and timing belt right now.
