American Motors: 64 amc rambler ambassador 990 H, small block chevy, amc rambler

Question
I have my hands on a 64 amc rambler ambassador 990 H it is overall great condition. The engine is missing it was an original 327. I don't think I will ever get my hands on another 327. I was wondering if instead of finding another could I put a small block chevy in the car. Something like a 350 or 283. Would the car need modifications to make the engines fit or would they just slide right in. What kind of mods am I looking to make if some are needed. If a chevy won't fit what can I use would I also be able to use the original transmission if it is still ok.  If not what kind of tranny could I use if it is no good. Thanks please reply would really help me alot.

Answer
Installing any engine besides the original 327 AMC will require modification. Besides, the AMC is the only engine that will bolt up to the transmission as I do not know of any adapters made that allows other engines to be used. The motor mount positioning and oil pan design could cause some major modifications to be performed.
