American Motors: Fuel Tank, fuel additives, full tank

Question
Hi: I am driving a 2008 Santa Fe 6 Cylinder. With the cost of fuel today I like many people, only let the gas level drop to 3/4 full tank and refill. I was told that if you don't let the gas tank go to empty before refilling, a lacquer will settle on the bottom of the fuel tank and clog up the fuel transfer line. Is this true. If so how often should I let the fuel tank go to empty or is there a fuel tank additive that I can add to the tank to prevent this lacquer build up. Thank you very much Fred NJ USA.

Answer
This is an old wives' tale. I do not know anything about a Hyundai, but your fuel tank is not going to get lacquer build up. It does not matter how low your tank gets in regards to fuel damaging it. There is nothing you need to add to prevent lacquer build up, it just isn't going to happen with today's fuel and if you drive the car regularly. Unless you plan on letting your car sit for more than 6 months, don't bother adding any fuel additives.
