American Motors: 66 classic disc brakes, caliper pistons, caliper piston

Question
Kevin is it normal for the disc brakes on this model to have a lot of drag compared to modern brakes.

Answer
It depends on what you consider a lot of drag.
Disc brakes as originally designed on cars do not work as efficiently as the disc brakes today.
When the brakes are applied, then released, the square shaped "O" ring seal in the caliper is suppose to pull the caliper piston slightly in the bore, thus removing pressure from the rotor. Over time, these square seals dry up and lose their resiliency. Corrosion also forms around the caliper pistons. This will cause the brakes to drag excessively.
Compared to modern brakes? Disc brakes from 1966 do drag more; however you will have to determine if it is excessive.
If you try to spin the wheel and it doesn't spin at all, it's probably excessive. It might be time to overhaul the calipers.
