American Motors: Racing Engine for a 1963 AMC Rambler Classic 660, amc rambler, throttle linkage

Question
Hello,

I just purchased a 1963 Rambler Classic 660 that had been sitting out for quite awhile. I got it home and drove it around a bit with no significant issues. The other day on my way home the engine began to race as I was attempting to slow down. Now when I start it, the engine races at a high speed. I checked the throttle linkage and gas pedal, and those don't seem to be the issue. My dad suggests that the carborator may have carmelized fuel inside it (having sat for so long) and something is stuck. Any advice? If possible, where could I find a carborator rebuild kit or schematic of the linkage?

Thanks,
Mike

Answer
Mike,
Usually a fast idle is caused be a sticking choke which in turn causes the fast idle cam to move into a position that creates a fast idle. Try cleaning & adjusting your automatic choke. If it has been sitting without running for awhile, it might be wise to clean or overhaul the carburetor.
