American Motors: power brake conversion, disc brakes, power brakes

Question
I just picked up a 1965 American 440. Want to know if I can slap on a power booster and perhaps convert front to disks. Have done it with aftermarket packages on a 68 Mustang but not sure if they exist for this car. Thanks

Answer
You can add power brakes by using a booster/master cylinder from another AMC that will fit. Try a Gremlin or Hornet. Disc brakes are a bit different. You have to find disc brakes from a 69 or earlier AMC. In 1970, AMC changed from a front suspension with a trunnion to having ball joints.
The two suspensions are not interchangable.

Let me give you additional information.
You can use later model disc brakes from a Gremlin, Concord or Hornet. Just use the late model spindles and the disc brakes should bolt up. Use a booster from the Gremlin, Concord or Hornet, along with the proportionong valve.
