American Motors: firing order, firing order, cj5

Question
How are the cylinders on a 304 counted?  If one is first on the driver side where is two?  Would two be the one next to one or the first one on passenger side?  My 304 is in a 1972 CJ5.

Standing in front of the engine the cylinders are positioned as:

                  FIREWALL

                  8       7
                  6       5
                  4       3
                  2       1
                   
                   RADIATOR


The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
