American Motors: charge problems, volt amp, amp meter

Question
I have a 1979 cj7 that i am currently restoring and am having difficulty with the wiring. I am still using the existing wire. The wire is in good shape and i have a voltmeter and checked the battery as well as starter, coil, ignition. It appears to me that when i drive my battery does not charge. i get home barely able to get it to turn over. I also noticed the lights dim when i drive. but this problem only happens sometimes and i cannot figure it out. any help would be much apreciated.

Answer
Justin,
I would suggest having your charging system tested by a shop using a Volt/Amp meter. It could be your alternator, your wiring, or even corrosion build up in the charging circuit. They should check the Current output (amps) of the alternator, as well as the Voltage. Output should be probably around 40 - 60 Amps @ around 14.5 Volts. Good luck.
