Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1954 Cadillac series 62, cadillac series, piston rings

Question
i have a 1954 Cadillac series 62 with the 331 the exhaust is all hooked up but i am getting exhaust threw a pipe coming strait down next to the exhaust i see it in my manual but can not figure out what it is or how to stop it i can barley drive the car with all the fumes please help

Answer
This is called the road draft tube. It vents the crankcase to relieve pressure of blow by in the engine. When the fumes are heavy from this pipe it usually indicated that the piston rings are leaking by and allowing compression and combustion into the crankcase and then venting out through the road draft tube. I would suggest a compression test on the engine to verify this.
