American Motors: SC/Rambler, bottom number, body model

Question
Hi Kevin, I am looking to find out the history for my 69 SC/Rambler, and I'd like to know when it came along in the assembly line. I was told that the VIN #'s might reveal that, is that true? Thanks, - Jon

Answer
Jon,
Unfortuantely, AMC VIN's do not provide production date information. There is, however, a plate on your driver's door with some information. It includes the body, model, trim & paint codes. The bottom number is the sequence code, the order in which it came down the assembly line.
The VIN shows in order company, year, transmission, series, body type, group, engine, and plant.
The engine also has a build plate screwed to front of the right valve cover. It gives the production date of the engine and an engine code. The cubic inch is also cast into each side of the block behind the motor mounts.
Hope this helps.
Kevin
